Huge Development Increase To Be Allowed in Alewife Area
This Thursday, Feb 9, City of Cambridge staff will present zoning recommendations that will allow a major increase in development in the Alewife area. Members of the community can share our views in a public comment period near the end of the meeting. At recent meetings of a City working group, the Community Development Department (CDD) proposed changes to the rules guiding development, that would allow 20-story buildings and over eight John Hancock buildings’ worth of new development in the area around Trader Joe’s and toward Belmont, known as the Quadrangle. For comparison, the existing buildings in the Quadrangle add up to less than two John Hancock buildings’ work of development.
Final Meeting of the Alewife Zoning Working Group Thursday, Feb 9, 6:00 pm (public comments generally start around 8:00)
Hybrid meeting:
- in-person meeting at 68 Moulton Street
- Zoom meeting sign-up at: https://cambridgema.zoom.us/j/85458744953
The agenda will include results from the transportation analysis (based on future development scenarios), final zoning recommendations, and an updated master plan from Healthpeak Properties, which now owns a large amount of property in the Alewife area.
These recommendations are a major change from the Envision Cambridge – Alewife Working Group discussions, which aimed to keep well-paying trade jobs and limit putting more residents in an area that is a flood zone and hard to access without a car.
