Jerry’s Pond construction has started

Construction of neighborhood Improvements at Jerry’s Pond has begun!  If you have walked or biked the area recently, you have probably seen evidence of workers setting up erosion control, erecting temporary fences and clearing out vegetation.

IQHQ (which bought the Jerry’s Pond site in 2020, along with the former W.R. Grace and One Alewife properties) has contracted with SumCo to make these improvements.  Sumco will build the boardwalks, scenic overlooks, an Environmental Center and a Community Garden. This work should be finished by the end of 2026, unless there are unexpected delays.

To see Jerry’s Pond construction plans for this month, both a narrative and map, go to IQHQ’s Jerry’s Pond Updates webpage. Jerry’s Pond construction plans for future months will be posted on this webpage.  The Alewife Study Group (ASG) will also provide periodic updates in this newsletter.

Overview of soil removal and remediation for Jerry’s Pond, the IQHQ Community Garden and the MBTA Plaza

Wherever IQHQ will be disturbing soil, whether at Jerry’s Pond, the Community Garden or the T Plaza, IQHQ has committed to following all federal, state, and local environmental regulations, as they have with their previous work at this site. IQHQ, their Licensed Site Professional (Haley and Aldrich) and ASG will continue to review the plans for this work.

ASG is the Public Involvement Plan (PIP) liaison for the community for environmental issues on the IQHQ site.  To learn more about PIPs, click HERE.  ASG will continue to post updates about this work in future issues of this newsletter.

IQHQ soil removal and remediation work on the community garden area scheduled to begin week of December 15

Work on the IQHQ Community Garden area should begin the week of December 15.  Under the direction of the site’s Licensed Site Professional (LSP) from Haley & Aldrich, air monitors will be set up and a certified asbestos monitor will be there full time.

Alewife Station Headhouse and Plaza Improvements in 2026

IQHQ has hired contractor Windover to begin work in the second quarter of 2026 on the MBTA Red Line Alewife Station headhouse and nearby outdoor plaza. Renovations will include an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant plaza surface, new and increased lighting, additional trees in planters, repainting the headhouse on the south, east and west sides, adding a community mural on the north side, and replacing the headhouse’s doors.  Locations for food trucks will also be included. This work is scheduled for completion at the end of 2026.
