IQHQ Construction Updates

The Alewife Study Group (ASG) will continue to provide updates on the IQHQ development in North Cambridge in this newsletter.  Here is one key update for next week, and beginning information on other updates for the next few weeks.

Path Changes

Starting on Monday, August 29, IQHQ will close the parking lot at One Alewife Center, and the path from that parking lot to the Alewife MBTA head house plaza, because of construction activity.  IQHQ estimates that this parking lot and path will be closed for the next three years as they renovate or demolish old buildings, and construct three new buildings and a parking garage.

During this time, two paths between Whittemore Avenue and the Alewife MBTA plaza will remain open.  Construction Plans, September 2022, in the News Section of the ASG website, shows these two paths with purple arrows: http://alewife.org/category/news

To increase safety, IQHQ and/or the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), will be making some changes to the path between the western side of Whittemore Avenue and the Alewife T plaza.  This path starts near the intersection of Whittemore and Alewife Brook parkway, runs along the western side of the One Alewife parking lot, then along some of the Alewife Loop Road, and then along Parkway Pond to the Alewife T plaza.  Some parts of the path are on DCR property and some parts are on IQHQ property.

ASG and other community members have been telling IQHQ and DCR about safety and maintenance issues with this path.

DCR and IQHQ have already, and will continue to:

  • Trim trees and other plants to improve visibility
  • Clean up trash
  • Lock the gate in the fence along Parkway Pond

IQHQ and DCR will make the following changes as soon as they receive the necessary permits from the City of Cambridge or the Commonwealth of Massachusetts:

  • Add more lighting
  • Install blue light security poles with call buttons
  • Repave the the northern section of this path, which currently has many cracks and bumps from tree roots

The path between the east end of Whittemore Avenue and the Linear bike/pedestrian path will remain open as usual.

ASG will continue to inform IQHQ of any issues with these paths.  If you have any questions, concerns or ideas, contact ASG by replying to the email version of this newsletter or by using the ASG Contact Form listed below.
