Help create rules for how the Alewife area is developed
At a Wed, August 10, 6:00pm Zoom meeting, a City working group will discuss how the land in the Alewife area should be used and how the area should be designed. The meeting is open to all, and there will be a period for you to voice your ideas and concerns.

This is the second of six meetings that will result in recommendations for rules on building development in the area between the Alewife T station, Alewife Reservation, Fresh Pond Reservation and Fresh Pond Mall. This area is a flood zone, has two of the city’s six extreme heat focus areas, has many properties with soil contamination from old industrial use, and is the last area in Cambridge with light industrial businesses that provide well-paying career jobs to people without college degrees.

Linear Park Redesign and Danehy Park Connector
The Cambridge Community Development Department (CDD) is in the process of redesigning Linear Park (the pedestrian and bike path that connects Alewife Station to Davis Square) and adding a path near Danehy Park. CDD held a few walks and events in late spring and early summer to discuss the paths and gather community feedback.
An exciting addition to the project is a study of how to connect the Rindge Ave neighbors to Danehy Park with a safe way for walkers and bicyclists to cross the commuter rail tracks near the Jefferson Park housing community. Alewife Study Group is partnering with the Fresh Pond Residents Alliance (the neighborhood group on the other side of the commuter rail tracks) to support a crossing. The City of Cambridge is asking residents to help water trees
The City of Cambridge is asking residents and local businesses for assistance in maintaining its healthy urban forest, which includes trees on streets, in parks, on private property, and campuses. Recent extreme heat and the current drought have stressed many new and mature trees throughout the city. These trees provide essential shade, clean the air, and support a living ecosystem.
“The most important thing people can do is help by watering trees near their home,” said Public Works Superintendent of Urban Forestry Andrew Putnam. “This is the most sustainable way to water, and we’re asking any residents and businesses who are able to please do their part by filling a Gator Bag on a tree or drenching the soil in a nearby tree well.” Watering in the early morning or at dusk is best.
